July Blog: Step Into Summer with Our Walking Challenge!

Happy July! Summer is in full swing, and what better way to enjoy the season than by joining our Walking Challenge from July 8-12? This challenge is all about making exercise accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of your fitness level. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced walker, we've got tips and incentives to help you stride towards better health.

**Why Walking?**

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective forms of exercise. It's easy on the joints, great for cardiovascular health, and can even benefit your pelvic floor. Regular walking helps to strengthen the muscles that support the pelvic organs, improve circulation, and enhance overall core stability. The gentle movement of walking engages the pelvic floor muscles, promoting better function and endurance. Plus, it can be done anywhere and doesn't require any special equipment.

**Challenge Goals:**

  • **Beginner (1k steps):** Add an extra 1,000 steps to your daily routine by parking further away from your destination, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or having a quick stroll during your lunch break.
  • **Intermediate (2k steps):** Boost your step count by 2,000 steps (approximately one mile). Consider using a loop in your neighborhood that you've tracked—it helps to have a familiar route. Walking your dog, playing with your kids, or taking a brisk walk after dinner can easily add those extra steps.
  • **Advanced (3k steps):** Challenge yourself to an additional 3,000 steps. Plan longer, intentional walks, listen to your favorite podcast, or explore new trails. Setting small, manageable goals throughout the day can make this target more achievable.

**Tips for Successful Walking:**

1. **Stay Hydrated:** Always carry a water bottle with you and drink regularly to stay hydrated, especially in the summer heat.

2. **Choose Good Shoes:** Choose a comfortable pair of walking shoes with good arch support. Proper footwear can prevent injuries and make your walks more enjoyable.

3. **Plan Ahead:** Set yourself up for success by preparing in advance. Keep your walking shoes and shorts by the door, plan your route, and schedule your walks at times that work best for you.

4. **Break It Down:** Remember, walking can be accumulated throughout the day. Aim for shorter, frequent walks if a long one seems daunting.

5. **Encourage Others:** Walking can be a social activity. Invite your kids, partner, or friends to join you. Not only does it make the walk more enjoyable, but it also encourages others to get moving.

6. **Track Your Progress:** Use a pedometer or a smartphone app to monitor your steps. Tracking can help you stay motivated and see your progress over time.

7. **Mix It Up:** Vary your walking routes to keep things interesting. Explore new neighborhoods, parks, or trails to enjoy different scenery and keep your walks exciting.

8. **Maintain Good Posture:** Keep your head up, shoulders back, and engage your core while walking. Think about keeping your ribcage over your pelvis. Good posture helps to maximize the benefits of walking and supports your pelvic floor.

9. **Walk Anywhere:** Walking can be done anywhere—whether you're on vacation, at work, or at home. If the weather is bad or it’s too hot outside, walking in place or around a room also counts!

10. **Track Your Route:** Use your car, smartphone, or city blocks to measure and know your route's step count. Having a pre-measured route can simplify your walks and ensure you hit your step goals without having to think about it.

**Get Ready to Walk!**

Walking is the combined number of steps you take in a day and can be broken into smaller, manageable pieces. With approximately 2,000 steps equaling one mile, it's easier than you think to hit your goals. By using a familiar loop or route, you can simplify your routine and enjoy the journey.

We care deeply about your fitness and well-being, and we believe that exercise doesn't have to be hard or complicated. This summer, let's make walking a fun and rewarding part of our daily lives. Join our Walking Challenge from July 8-12, and let's stride towards health and happiness together!

Happy walking!

May your coffee and your pelvic floor be strong today,

Paula
